Dry Wit: Redefining the Non-Alcoholic Wine Experience

I’m delighted to introduce Dry Wit, a distinguished brand in the realm of refined, alcohol-free libations. This Minnesota-born marvel has not only captivated my taste buds but also ignited my imagination, presenting a lineup that stands unrivaled in the industry.

    The Story of Dry Wit

    Founded Date: January 8, 2018

Megan Dayton and Peder Schweigert’s personal journeys and professional experiences illuminated a glaring void in the market for premium, non-alcoholic beverages. Megan’s decision to quit drinking on March 9, 2017, propelled her to seek sophisticated, alcohol-free alternatives that could deliver the same enjoyment and complexity as traditional wines. This quest led her to create a product for others who, like her, choose to abstain from alcohol for health reasons, personal choice, or preference.

Peder Schweigert, with his extensive background from Marvel Bar, had already begun pioneering non-alcoholic cocktails. His dedication to crafting comprehensive beverage programs that bridge the gap between alcoholic and non-alcoholic options was instrumental in Dry Wit’s development. Schweigert’s innovative use of unique botanicals and his commitment to creating complex flavors without relying on alcohol removal processes or added sugars set Dry Wit apart in the non-alcoholic beverage market.

Together, Dayton and Schweigert aimed to elevate the non-alcoholic drinking experience, offering sophisticated, flavorful alternatives that could stand on their own as premium beverages. Their combined vision and expertise have resulted in a brand that not only meets the needs of those abstaining from alcohol but also enriches the overall beverage landscape with its innovative approach and high-quality offerings.

Dry Wit’s mission is to create celebratory experiences for everyone!

The Visionaries Behind Dry Wit: Q & A

    Megan Dayton

Megan has found immense support for sobriety in the Twin Cities, crediting Hazelden for creating a nurturing environment for those in recovery.

    • Favorite Resource: The Big Book and conversations with others in recovery.
    • Favorite Non-Alcoholic Beverage: Dry Wit, which she designed with Peder Schweigert to fulfill her vision of an alcohol-free drink that retains the sophistication of wine.
    • Favorite Recovery Book: “Drop the Rock”
    • Advice for Newcomers to Recovery: Keep not drinking alcohol. Problems will ease or disappear with time. Seek additional resources if needed.
    • Impact of Recovery on Family Life: Megan’s family life changed significantly two years into her sobriety after the death of her husband. Now, her kids trust her, and she is no longer a source of anxiety for her mother and children.
    • Going Public with Recovery: Sharing her recovery story benefits others. Sobriety is a superpower and should not be a source of shame. Helping others by sharing your story is invaluable.
    • Admired Sober Celebrities: Anyone in the public eye who shares their recovery story.
    • Current Playlist: Learning about interior design with Create Academy on Instagram.
    • Favorite Movie/TV Series About Addiction: “The Sound of Metal” for its beautiful depiction of acceptance and “Pleasure Unwoven,” which helped her understand addiction’s impact on the brain.

    Peder Schweigert

Peder began his sobriety journey in the spring of 2016. Although he doesn’t have a specific sobriety date, his commitment to a life without alcohol has been transformative both personally and professionally.

Initially, Peder found sobriety in the Twin Cities intimidating. With limited options and a social circle entrenched in the service industry, he felt isolated. This changed in 2020 when Peder took a public stance on sobriety, creating a space within a renowned cocktail bar for non-drinkers to socialize. The NA scene has since flourished, offering many options. Peder now focuses on family-friendly activities with his toddler.

    • Favorite Resource: Julia Bainbridge’s book “Good Drinks” showcases the creativity in NA drinks.
    • Favorite Non-Alcoholic Beverage: Aside from Dry Wit, Peder enjoys Bauhaus Nah and exploring European NA beers.
    • Favorite Recovery Books: “The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life” by Thomas Moore and “The Book of Joy” by the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams.
    • Advice for Newcomers to Recovery: Life without alcohol is challenging at first. Find comfort in your skin with time and support from therapists, mentors, and loved ones. The presence of family is crucial, and alcohol can hinder this.
    • Going Public with Recovery: Initially intimidating, sharing his recovery journey brought overwhelming positivity and support. He used his platform to show that thriving in the beverage industry without alcohol is possible and can change cultural norms.
    • Admired Sober Celebrities: Any public figure who challenges societal norms by choosing not to drink.
    • Current Playlist: Enjoys upbeat rhythms like “Global Groove” on Spotify.
    • Favorite Movie/TV Series About Addiction: “House of Cards,” particularly the addiction scenes with Peter Russo.

The Lineup: Unique Botanicals & Ingredients

Pippi: Light, effervescent, and utterly delightful.

    • Pine Tea (White Pine Needles): Adds a distinctive, refreshing note that is rarely found in beverages.
    • Verjus: Provides acidity and complexity, commonly used in gourmet cooking but less so in beverages.
    • Rice Vinegar and Salt: Enhances the drink’s body and mouthfeel, contributing to a balanced flavor profile.

Insider Sips: Pippi’s namesake, Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Efraimsdotter Longstocking!

Salinger: A more complex offering that showcases the true potential of NA beverages. With its heavier body, tannic structure, Salinger is a conversation starter that holds its own against traditional wines. Perfect pairing partner for cheese, salami & crackers, Korean takeout, roast chicken, and cold pizza.

    • Linden Flowers: Known for their delicate, floral aroma, linden flowers add a unique botanical element.
    • Clarified Pear Juice: Offers a clean, crisp sweetness without the need for added sugars.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar and Salt: Adds depth and a slight tang, enhancing the overall complexity of the beverage.

Bruce: A light-bodied red that defies expectations. The innovative use of bay leaf creates a unique flavor profile that’s both familiar and excitingly novel.

    • Bay Leaf: An unconventional choice for beverages, bay leaf imparts a subtle herbal note.
    • Cherry Juice: Provides a rich, fruity base that complements the other ingredients.
    • Red Grape Verjus: Adds acidity and a wine-like quality, enhancing the drink’s sophistication.

    Innovative Techniques

Dry Wit employs several innovative techniques to create a unique drinking experience.

    • Carbonation: Used to move flavors around the palate, enhancing the sensory experience.
    • No Added Sugar: Relies on the natural sweetness of juices, making it a healthier option.

Dry Wit presents a symphony of flavors that tantalize the palate and redefine our expectations of an alcohol-free wine. Megan Dayton and Peder Schweigert’s creations transcend mere beverage production, embodying the essence of innovation and the artistry of crafting intricate, satisfying drinks without a hint of alcohol.

When we lift a glass of Pippi, Salinger, or Bruce, we are not merely savoring a drink – we are engaging in a revolution. Dry Wit’s scrupulous attention to ingredient selection, from white pine needles to linden flowers, underscores a dedication to quality that stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest wineries. However, it is the brand’s distinctive botanicals and commitment to pioneering techniques that truly distinguish it, offering a refined drinking experience accessible to all, regardless of their stance on alcohol.

In this new social drink era where wellness-focused and mindful consumption are gaining prominence, Dry Wit serves as a reminder that eschewing alcohol need not come at the expense of flavor, complexity, or the pleasure of toasting. Keep your spirits high and your wits sharper!
